Loaves and Fishes
In 1983, a new non-profit approached the Lutheran congregation at 2200 Fremont Ave North (at that time called Bethlehem) about sharing their kitchen space for a nightly free meal. As Loaves and Fishes grew, our site became one of 9 sites throughout the metro area, but still the only one in North Minneapolis.
35 volunteer groups currently rotate preparing and serving hot meals to 100-300 guests per evening, meeting a critical need in our community. The groups come mostly from churches and corporate entities. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Loaves and Fishes HQ. This Loaves and Fishes site has many children, so has hosted summer lunches for kids too.
The 1929 kitchen was completely remodeled in the summer of 2011, thanks to a matching grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation and contributions from over half the volunteer teams, grants and individual donations. See the Post-Remodel Newsletter for more photos and information!
