Baptism Teaching Sermon

“Baptism is not water only, but it is water used together with God’s Word and by his command.” Luther’s Small Catechism

The Free Gifts of Baptism

  1. Identity – adoption into a family/community

Who are the people who have helped you in the process of becoming part of God’s family?

  1. Death and New Life – joins us to Christ

To what experience (before our mortal death) can you compare the death and resurrection we are offered in Christ?

  1. Freedom – and commissioning to do God’s work

Do you know someone who is commissioned to do something specific? In your baptism, to what are you commissioned?

The charge during the Affirmation of Baptism (Confirmation):

to live among God’s faithful people,

to hear his Word and share in his supper,

to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,

to serve all people following the example of our Lord Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth
